All About CBD
TIME FOR A LESSON IN CBD
What Is CBD?
CBD (also known as cannabidiol) is a component of the hemp plant that is non-psychoactive – meaning it won’t suddenly make you want to listen to Phish on repeat while discussing the universe and eating too much Taco Bell. (Yes, those are bad generalizations of marijuana usage, yes, we are just kidding). Basically, CBD won’t get you high. Sorry!
CBD is just one of the cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids that are present when extracting what’s collectively known as CBD from the plant, this can include a teeny-tiny amount of THC, but we’ll get to that in a moment.
So what does CBD actually do?
CBD can be taken internally to help with anxiety, clear your head for more focus, and relieve pain. Topically, CBD can prevent and relieve pain and inflammation at the point of contact, which is why it has become popular in muscle rubs and salves. Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, CBD has been shown to help soothe acne, eczema, and psoriasis, calming redness as well as balancing oil production. CBD also has antioxidative properties which help reduce the signs of aging, smoothing fine lines and banishing dull skin for a more radiant complexion.
But isn’t there still THC in CBD?
Legally, there can be up to 0.3% THC in CBD products. This type of CBD is known as full spectrum, which means that all the cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids are extracted from the plant. This is a good thing as these have proven to work together with CBD to create what’s known as the Entourage Effect.
The best way to describe the entourage effect is with the old adages “No man is an island” or “There’s no ‘I’ in team.” While CBD is great on its own, it works much better in a “team” when there are other cannabinoids present, which is why full-spectrum is said to provide better results.
There’s also CBD isolate – this is exactly what it sounds like: just CBD, nothing else. This can be ok, except you are missing out on all the goodness of the plant just because you don’t want any THC.
CLOUD BRINGS ALL THE GOODNESS OF THE PLANT BUT CONTAINS ZERO THC. NONE, NADA, ZIP, ZERO.
How did we do that? Broad Spectrum CBD
Broad Spectrum is the perfect mix: it gets all the benefits of full-spectrum without the THC. The reason we chose broad-spectrum is that Cloud was created for those who believe in never standing still…this can include everyone from bartenders to lawyers, entrepreneurs to law enforcement. While you’d have to use a ton of Full Spectrum CBD to get enough THC in your system to fail a drug test, we’d prefer to be on the safe side so that everyone can enjoy Cloud products without any worry. We thought broad-spectrum was the perfect middle-ground.
Review of Isolate vs. Full Spectrum Vs. Broad Spectrum CBD
CBD Isolate: Just CBD. No other cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids. This basically strips away a lot of the goodness of the plant.
Full-Spectrum CBD: The whole shebang – CBD, other cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids and up to 0.3% THC.
Broad-spectrum CBD: all the goodness of full-spectrum without THC. As Goldilocks might say, “just right”.
Let’s talk CBD oil
CBD itself is an extraction. It actually is hard and crystalized at room temperature. In order to get this goodness into your body, you need a carrier, which sounds like the creepy part of an alien movie.
A carrier is an oil that can be infused by CBD to keep it liquid and deliver it into the blood stream orally or into the skin topically. Many tinctures use MCT, coconut or olive oil.
In facial products, most use coconut oil as a carrier. While coconut oil had its moment in the sun as being the “be all, end all” for skin, it has been found to be problematic and clog pores.
This is why for our HALCYON Golden Facial Glow oil, we infused CBD into Argan oil as the carrier as it is non-comedogenic & beneficial for all skin types.
It is also important to know that CBD oil is not the same thing as hemp seed oil. The two are often used interchangeably, but CBD oil is richly concentrated in cannabidiol (and terpenes and flavonoids) whereas hemp seed oil does not contain CBD…or may have tiny trace amounts only. These are the “CBD” products that can be sold on Amazon. Avoid, unless that’s what you are going for…
Since CBD has always been infused into oil, products had to be oil-based or emulsified (often using polysorbate – which is something we aren’t big fans of). That changed with Nanotechnology…
What is Nanotechnology?
In layman’s terms, it creates teeny-tiny droplets that are soluble in water as well as more bioavailable. Bioavailable refers to how readily a substance is received by the body. Being more bioavailable means it is better received, more quickly by the body…which boils down to it being faster-acting. Using nanotechnology, our Cloud KUSHON CBD StepPrep™ can achieve 5x faster onset than traditional CBD oil products. That means KUSHON delivers pain relief to feet 5x faster than a lotion PLUS it dries quickly.
KUSHON HAD ONE MAIN GOAL AND SEVERAL PARAMETERS.
Goal: A quick-dry CBD solution to use on feet, especially when wearing heels.
Parameters: Non-toxic, all-natural, non-greasy/non-slip, no messy hands (aka tubes or jars of cream), no other messes (sprays), and easy to take with for touchups if needed.
After many, many tests and failures, we discovered a water-soluble CBD that didn’t use polysorbate or other potentially toxic emulsifiers but used nanotechnology and a natural emulsifier. This enabled us to create a non-slippery, quick-drying formula that worked immediately in a compact, mess-free roll-on bottle. The fact that it has a much faster onset was icing on the cake!
Final Review (there will be a test):
ALL Cloud products contain ZERO THC. This is because we use broad-spectrum CBD, which contains all the goodness of full-spectrum without the THC. CBD isolate is for the birds.
CBD for skin is
Anti-inflammatory (soothing & calming)
Full of antioxidative properties that fight free radicals
An analgesic (relieves and prevents pain)
Balancing – for all skin types, acne to dry and sensitive skin
CBD Oil is
CBD infused into a carrier oil, typically MCT, Olive or Coconut (but not our facial products, we use Argan Oil)
A process that emulsifies CBD into tiny droplets that are better received by the body
